What is 1:1 Aspect Ratio?
1:1 is the square: width equals height exactly, decimal 1.0. It is the most neutral shape there is - no orientation, symmetric cropping, and it reads the same on a phone or a billboard. Instagram made it the default shape of social photography with its original 640×640 (later 1080×1080) feed, and it remains the shape of profile pictures, album covers, app icons and QR codes. Photographers value the square for centred, symmetric compositions - it is the format of the classic medium-format cameras that shot 6×6 film.

The square in design systems
Squares tile perfectly, scale without orientation decisions, and crop symmetrically from any rectangle with minimal loss - which is why design systems use 1:1 for icons, thumbnails and avatars. When one image must serve many contexts (a release cover that becomes an app icon, a OG preview, a print label), master it square at high resolution and derive the rectangles; the reverse path - deriving a square from a wide master - always costs more content.
