What is Aspect Ratio for Print?
Print has fixed shapes: paper comes in standard ratios and the photo must match or be cropped. The common photo papers descend from film: 4×6 inches is exactly the 3:2 of a 35 mm frame, so camera files print with no trim. 8×10 is 5:4, portrait-paper shaped, requiring a width crop from 3:2 files. A-series paper (A4, A3) uses the √2 ratio (1:1.414), chosen so each size folds from the next larger one. The second half of print maths is resolution: at photo quality (300 DPI) an inch needs 300 pixels, so an 8×10 print needs 2400×3000 pixels - and the ratio and the DPI must both work out before you order.

The two print equations
Every print job solves two equations at once. Shape: does the file's ratio match the paper's? (4×6 = 3:2, 5×7 = 5:7, 8×10 = 5:4, 11×14 = 11:14, A-series = 1:√2.) Resolution: does the file have 300 pixels per inch of print? The calculator handles the shape side - enter the paper ratio and one dimension - and the DPI rule gives the pixels: multiply each inch by 300. When both equations pass, the print comes out uncropped and sharp.
Working with frames
Off-the-shelf frames inherit paper ratios: 8×10 frames want 5:4, 4×6 frames want 3:2, and square frames want 1:1. A practical habit is to master-print at 3:2 (the camera native), then cut-down mats for other frames - a mat with a 5:4 window inside a 3:2 print preserves the whole photograph while fitting the frame, which is how galleries show uncropped work.
